In Canada, the term we use is "Stackwall Construction" but in the US, they refer to it as "Cordwood Construction".

Regardless of the term used, this method of construction is fascinating and deserves further investigation. From Wikipedia:
"Cordwood construction (also called cordwood masonry, stackwall construction or stackwood construction) is a term used for a natural building method in which cordwood or short pieces of debarked tree are laid up crosswise with masonry mixtures to build a wall."
Cordwood masonry has an unknown origin. You can find some homes in Canada that are between 100 and 200 years old!
One of the most common questions asked is
"How much maintenance is there with these homes?"
People are surprised to learn that other than the initial caulking (silicon or Permachink is advised) the walls will probably outlast you, provided an adequate overhang is on the house which will keep the walls dry. Of course standard maintenance such as the roof will be required just like with a conventional build.
One of the advantages to Stackwall Construction is energy efficiency.
From the book Stackwall Construction - Double Wall Technique by Cliff Shockey -
"Cordwood houses provide two benefits: good insulative values and thermal mass. Since the inside mortar joints are insulated from the outside wall, the mortar acts as thermal mass to keep your house at a more consistent temperature. The cordwood itself is sort of an insulator and the density of the wood will have a slight effect on its efficiency. Sawdust or other materials fill in the cavity between the mortar and help insulate the walls."
I currently have TWO Stackwall homes listed for sale up in Ski Country outside Ottawa!!
These would make great cottages or full 4 season homes. Please check out their videos below and make sure you call me if you're interested in having a personal showing of either or both of these very unique properties:
